Peridot on Basalt from San Carlos, Arizona

Most gems form in the Earth's crust. Peridot is one of the very few born far deeper, in the mantle, some 30 to 50 miles below your feet, where olivine crystallizes in heat and crushing pressure. So how did it get here? It hitched a ride. When volcanoes erupted near San Carlos, Arizona, molten basalt raced upward so fast that it tore off chunks of mantle and carried them to the surface in a matter of hours, too quickly for the heavy green crystals to sink back down. When the lava cooled, it froze them in place, glittering in their black volcanic cradle, its lava still pocked with bubbles from the ride.

The ancient Egyptians called peridot the gem of the sun and believed it glowed after dark; the Romans called it the evening emerald. Today it is the August birthstone, kept for abundance, joy, and releasing old jealousy and resentment to make room for growth. Peridot is also one of the only gems found in meteorites, so this piece has cousins among the stars. Keep it where you want a bright, fresh start.
